FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS
A *free* OPEN STUDIO SUMMER SERIES
WHAT IT IS
Some of the best creative work happens when there's no brief, no client, and no pressure. Just a studio, a concept, and the freedom to experiment.
That's exactly what Friday Night Lights is.
Once a month this summer, we're opening the studio doors for a free, theme-driven open shoot night designed for photographers who want to push their creative boundaries, build their portfolio, connect with other creatives, and just make something interesting.
No lectures. No formal instruction. Just a fully styled setup, a professional model, and an instructor on-site to help you work through ideas in real time.
WHY WE’RE DOING THIS
From the beginning, The Socialight Studio was never meant to just be a room you rent. It's meant to be a creative community, and Friday Night Lights is us putting that into practice. We want photographers at every level to have access to a professional environment where experimentation is encouraged and showing up without a fully formed idea is completely fine.
HOW IT WORKS
RSVPs are free and limited to 6 people per night. Grabbing one guarantees you shooting time.
No spot? Come anyway. Walk-ins are welcome to watch, connect, and pick things up by being in the room. No sign-up needed for that.
On the night itself, shoot order runs in the order people with RSVPs sign in at the door. When it's your turn, the timer starts and the setup is yours. A model is already there. The gear is ready. The instructor is nearby if you get stuck or want a second opinion.
One thing we ask: images taken during Friday Night Lights get shared with The Socialight Studio for promotional use. Full credit, always. By attending you're agreeing to that.
JUNE/
shadow play
Light is only half the story.
This night is about what happens when you pull it back. We're working with sculpted light, deep contrast, and shadow used intentionally rather than avoided. The reference point is editorial and graphic, think portraiture that has a point of view. The setup is built for experimentation and there's no single right answer for what you make with it.

First come, first served style. Capped at 6 photographers to allow everyone shoot time.
JULY/
FABRIC play
Sheer white drapes hung throughout the space. Fans running. Light coming through.
The setup this night is built around flow, diffusion, and movement. Whether you use the fabric as a backdrop, a veil, a diffuser, or something you haven't thought of yet is entirely up to you. Photographers who like to think in layers tend to love this one.

aug/
plastic play
Clear corrugated acrylic. Hanging plastic sheeting. Fans and directional light doing things you don't fully expect.
This night is for photographers who want to get into abstraction and distortion, what happens when something translucent and unpredictable sits between your lens and your subject. It's the most experimental of the three and probably the most surprising.
